Cell culture is a set of biology techniques used to grow cells outside their organism (ex-vivo) or their original environment.
The cells cultured can be :
  • Cells recently removed from an organism (biopsy). We then speak of primary culture and primary cells. These cells cannot be kept in culture indefinitely because they have a limited division capacity (limited number of divisions).
  • Immortalized cells or cell lines. These cells have an unlimited capacity of division. These cell lines can be cancer cells, healthy cells made artificially immortalized or stem cells.

Abm Cell Culture

Animal cells are generally cultivated in a medium that provides them with all the essential elements for their growth. For this, flasks, boxes or culture plates are used depending on the quantity of cells desired and the applications. The culture media are then placed in incubators at a temperature of 37°C and in a very humid atmosphere with a controlled CO2 content (5%) in order to get as close as possible to the physiological conditions.
There are 2 types of cell culture: 2D culture and 3D culture. The 2D culture consists in cultivating the cells in a single layer while the 3D culture aims at reproducing the cellular structures present in the body.

abm provides numerous products and tools for cell culture work, including our popular BacAway bacteria contamination control agent. The BacAway bacteria contamination control agent is very useful in primary cell and stable cell line generation or research, or any cell culture work that involves extended period of cell culture. Over longer periods of culture, such as stable cell generation, cell culture contaminination with bacteria is often unavoidable, and precious cell cultures can be lost overnight.

Mycoplasma Detection Kits – Conventional PCR

Mycoplasma contamination is a serious problem for laboratories due to its impact on cell properties and safety of biological products. Mycoplasma contaminations in cell cultures are unnoticeable (macroscopically as well as microscopically), making routine tests for reliable mycoplasma detection necessary. They represent a serious concern for academic and biopharmaceutical laboratories due to their effects on cell properties and on safety of biological products.
Mycoplasma (term often interchangeably used with Mollicutes, which include Mycoplasma, Acholeplasma, and Spiroplasma) are ubiquitous in the environment. In cell culture laboratories, 95 % of all mycoplasma infections in continuous cell lines are caused by as few as six contaminant species of bovine, swine, and human origin. These microbial agents easily spread from an infected cell culture batch to another by aerosol transmission or inadequate aseptic techniques.
Regular mycoplasma testing and control procedures help avoiding the costly consequences of a cell culture contamination and ensuring safe biopharmaceuticals and reliable scientific results. Consequently, most scientific publishers do not accept submission of cell-based studies without proof of the performed mycoplasma tests.
Compared to alternative methods, PCR-based mycoplasma detection kits are rapid, simple and do not require viable mycoplasma, special equipment, or extensive staff training.
